Ramana Maharshi

Ramana Maharshi means „Great Sage“ from maha = great, rishi = sage), birth name: Venkataraman.

Ramana Maharshi taught self enquiry (Atma Vichara) with the question “Who am I?” He is know as one of the most famous sages and representatives of the Advaita-Vedanta of the 20th century. Dozens of western Satsang teachers refer until now to him and consider him as their predecessor.   Ramana taught with preference through what his followers call “language of stillness”.

He liked to refer questioners to Atma Vichara (self enquiry) trying to point to their true nature through the question “Who am I?” This “ultimate truth” is known in Advaita as “Being-Consciousness-Bliss” (Sanskrit: Sat-Chit-Ananda). According to Ramana it is possible to successfully dissolve the wrong identification with body or mind through the practice of self enquiry. After that a reality appears which is not new.
